Frequently Asked Questions
-
A breast ultrasound is a safe, gentle, radiation-free imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the inside of your breast. It can help determine whether a lump is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid mass, detect changes in dense breast tissue, and follow up on anything unusual found during a self-exam or mammogram. It's quick, painless, and requires no compression.
-
A Breast Screening Ultrasound ($350) is a comprehensive scan of your entire breast and underarm areas. It's for women who want to stay proactive about their health — even with no symptoms or specific concerns. Especially recommended for women with dense breast tissue.
A Diagnostic Breast Ultrasound ($295) targets a specific area of concern. If you've noticed a lump, localized pain, itching, nipple changes, or anything unusual, this scan evaluates that area in detail to help guide next steps.
-
No — to either. We created The Breast Lab specifically to remove those barriers. You can book directly online, no referral required, and we don't bill insurance. We do provide a superbill after your appointment that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

If your scan reveals any areas of concern, our radiologist will note it clearly in your report along with recommended next steps. We'll guide you on what to do — whether that's following up with your primary care doctor, seeking a specialist, or scheduling a follow-up scan. You won't be left with a confusing report and no direction.
-
Completely. Breast ultrasound uses sound waves — there is zero radiation involved. It's safe for women of all ages, including younger women and those who are pregnant. We use professional-grade equipment that meets the highest safety standards.
-
Very little preparation is needed. On the day of your scan:
Wear a two-piece outfit for easy access
Avoid applying lotion, powder, or deodorant to your chest area
Have a quiet, private space ready at home
That's it — we handle the rest
-
bsolutely. Breast cancer can affect women of any age, and there are no age restrictions for our service. Ultrasound is actually particularly effective for younger women and those with dense breast tissue, where mammograms are less reliable. If you have a concern or simply want peace of mind, you don't need to wait until you're 40.
-
No — and we're transparent about that. Breast ultrasound is a powerful supplement to mammography, not a replacement. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40 for average-risk women. Our service is especially valuable for adding a layer of detection for women with dense tissue, younger women, or anyone with a specific concern. We always recommend discussing your full screening plan with your doctor.
